what size shoe do two year olds wear

This is a question that has come up quite a few times since my daughter turned two. It’s an important one as well, because what size shoes you buy her will have an effect on the rest of her life. You know this is true because she is your baby and you don’t want anything to go wrong with those feet of hers!

The short answer to this question, which I hope makes it easier for you when shopping for shoes, is that there are no specific answers per say. It all depends on the style, brand and size of the particular shoe in question.

The long answer…

When it comes to shoes, kids really do just grow into them. They will always be a little big on the inside and you might find that they are too big at two and two and a half. Or, they will be too small and never grow into them properly.

When you think of shoes your first thought is probably ‘size’, but when it comes to kids there are other issues in play as well!

Here are the main points to keep in mind when shopping for toddler shoes:

Color: The color of the shoe should match that of the clothes your child likes (if you’re unsure about this, ask a friend or relative). Black and white are a safe bet, as are ‘nude’ (beige) and pink.

Style: When it comes to style, I don’t particularly care so much about the details when buying for my daughter. As long as they are leather shoes with a strap across the top (like ballet shoes), then I’m happy. If you want to go all out on style, there are many places online where you can buy girls shoes that look like Mary Janes or just plain ones with buckles.

Sizes: As mentioned, when it comes to toddlers there are no hard and fast rules as far as shoe sizes go. However, here are a few guidelines to consider:

Age 1/2: Usually requires a shoe size 6 or 8. My daughter is age 1/2 and wears a size 6.

Age 3/4: Usually requires shoe sizes 4 or 5. My daughter is age 3/4 and wears a size 4. She’s not the smallest child, but her feet grow so fast that it’s impossible to know if she’ll be moving up in size at this point or not.

Age 5/6: Usually requires shoe sizes 3 or 4. My daughter is age 5/6 and wears a size 2. She will be moving up to a size 3 in a couple of weeks, but I doubt she’ll make it to 4 before she stops growing (she was 2 1/2 when I bought her the shoes for her birthday).

Don’t forget to buy the socks that go with your toddler shoes! You can get them in the same color or match your child’s clothes. It should be noted that children sometimes don’t like socks with their shoes. My daughter doesn’t like hers.
